The Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Juan Carlos Salazar, arrived in Astana on his first official visit, the Ministry of Transport reported. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

This trip was Juan Carlos Salazar's first visit to Central Asian countries.

"As part of the visit, the ICAO head will take part in the ICAO Security Week 2026, which will be held in Astana on October 20-22," the statement said.

Kazakhstan is hosting such a large-scale international event for the first time, bringing together heads of aviation authorities, representatives of international organizations, airlines and airports, as well as leading industry experts.

"The holding of ICAO Security Week in Kazakhstan and the official visit of the organization's Secretary General demonstrate the high trust of the international aviation community in our country, recognition of Kazakhstan's achievements in ensuring aviation security, and the strengthening of its position in world aviation," the ministry noted.

The event is expected to give additional impetus to strengthening the global aviation security system and developing joint approaches to countering modern threats.

ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. ICAO develops international standards and recommended practices in the field of civil aviation.

Kazakhstan has been a member of ICAO since 1992. In 2024, Kazakhstan became the first among Central Asian countries to open a permanent mission to ICAO in Montreal.
