Flash flooding in Grand Canyon National Park caused major damage to the critical water pipeline that supplies the South Rim. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
According to local media reports, about 50 hikers were safely airlifted out of the area, and a number of trails were closed as a safety precaution.
The flooding damaged buildings in Bright Angel Canyon. Bright Angel Canyon, the scene of the flash floods, meets the Colorado River. Lodging along the rim of the canyon was shut down due to flooding, and tourists were checked out of the El Tovar Hotel.
A section of the pipeline that brings water to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is located below Bright Angel Lodge in Arizona. This pipeline is critical infrastructure for the park.
The flooding occurred on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. Heavy rains caused flash flooding in the canyon. Damage assessment and restoration efforts are currently underway.
The National Park Service urges visitors to follow safety precautions and avoid closed areas. The timeline for pipeline restoration is not yet known.
