Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32 and were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Regular and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw. Paraguay were more accurate in the penalty shootout, winning 4-3.
Julio Enciso stood out, putting the South American team ahead. Kai Havertz scored for Germany in the 55th minute to equalize. In the 102nd minute, Germany defender Jonathan Tah scored a goal that was disallowed after a VAR review due to a foul by Waldemar Anton on the opposing goalkeeper.
After the group stage, Germany had six points and finished first in Group E. Paraguay earned four points and finished third in Group D.
Previously, Germany had reached penalty shootouts four times at World Cups and won all of them. Germany is a four-time world champion (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014). However, at the previous two World Cups — in Russia and Qatar — the German team failed to even reach the knockout stage.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that Brazil advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Japan in a dramatic first-round playoff match.
