German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he opposes new borrowing by the European Union, saying such a step threatens sovereignty. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

At the same time, he supported continued financial assistance to Kyiv through loans.

"New borrowing by Europe is not a solution to the problem. Excessive debt threatens sovereignty and limits freedom of action," Merz said in a speech in the Bundestag ahead of the European Council meeting scheduled for June 18-19 in Brussels.

According to him, some European countries are already spending more money on paying interest on debts than on defense due to enormous debt burdens.

"We must not let the European budget reach such a state," Merz stated.

Despite the excessive increase in the debt burden of the pan-European budget, the German Chancellor said that the EU must continue financial support to Kyiv.

"Specifically, the European Union's loan to Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros has been approved," Merz announced.

His statement about the need for further funding of Kyiv caused discontent among some parliament deputies present in the hall.
