The match, played on Monday in Boston, ended 1-1 in regular time. Julio Enciso scored for Paraguay in the 42nd minute, while Kai Havertz equalized for Germany in the 54th minute.

With no winner after regular time, the teams played two extra periods. In the 102nd minute, German defender Jonathan Tah scored, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for a foul.

The match was decided by a penalty shootout, which Paraguay won, earning a spot in the round of 16.

Paraguay's President Santiago Peña declared June 30 a national holiday in honor of the national team's historic achievement in defeating Germany. The president thanked the players on social media, writing: "You have reunited millions of Paraguayans under one flag again."
