Damage from high school student protests in France is estimated at €33-38 million. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to statements from authorities in three regions of the country, the main material damage was distributed as follows. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on TF1 television that more than 5,000 people have been detained in the country since the start of the week, with 85% of them being minors.
The protests, during which arson, theft and acts of vandalism were recorded, covered 735 schools (of which more than 100 lycées were ransacked). About 400 educational institutions were forced to switch completely to remote work due to blockades and clashes.
French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered that parents of protesting teenagers be held civilly liable, obliging them to jointly pay for repairs and fully compensate for the damage caused to educational institutions.
The government considers this financial recovery measure more effective than imprisonment for teenagers.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that mass student protests in France began over dissatisfaction with the degradation of the education system, high academic workload, teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms.
