Europe has calculated the damage from wildfires and extreme heat. In France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Romania, they have caused at least €3.1 billion in damages. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Financial Times.
In the first two months of the wildfire season, nearly half a million hectares have burned in these five European countries alone. The FT's calculations are based on a methodology used by the European Commission, reflecting the costs of restoring burned areas to their previous state.
However, the total damage will be much higher, the publication notes, as insurance companies, households and businesses are still calculating losses from property damage, crop failure, and losses in the tourism sector. In addition, the FT's calculations do not fully account for damage from recent fires in Greece and do not include data from other EU countries.
The publication also points to economic losses from drought in Europe and falling water levels in the Rhine and Danube, which disrupt freight transport and lead to reduced production volumes.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that up to 13 wildfires are registered per day in Kazakhstan.
