The European Union must find at least €35 billion within its 2028-2034 budget to pay interest on loans granted to Ukraine. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

This was written by Politico. A European Commission document sent to member states says: "In 2028-2034, €35 billion will be needed to pay interest on Ukraine's loans. If the interest rate rises by 1%, this amount will increase to €41.9 billion."

According to the document, the source of funding for these expenses still needs to be identified. EU leaders will discuss the union's budget at a summit on November 26-27.

According to the publication, discussing the issue of paying interest on Ukraine's loans may prove difficult. The reason is that Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and Bulgaria do not want to participate in paying interest on future loans to Kyiv.

The European Commission has provided Ukraine with loans totaling €171 billion since 2014. European leaders continue to negotiate the union's seven-year budget for 2028-2034.

Brussels aims to complete the negotiations by the end of this year. Because election campaigns in a number of EU countries in 2027 may further complicate reaching a common agreement.
