Emily Wilson, professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, is retranslating Homer's 'Odyssey'. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
Her 2017 translation was hailed as the first major English-language translation of the epic by a woman and became a bestseller, sparking cultural debates. Now she has decided to revisit her work.
"It's a complete retranslation. It's not a revision of the old version," Wilson told The Associated Press in a Zoom interview from her home in Philadelphia. "I'm about halfway through."
According to Wilson, the new translation will differ from her first work. She approaches Homer's text with a fresh perspective, aiming to make it more accurate and accessible to modern readers.
It is worth noting that Wilson's 2017 translation was the first complete translation of 'The Odyssey' by a female author. This work also sparked cultural discussions.
Currently, Wilson has completed half of the new translation. The completion date is not yet known, but her new work is generating great interest in the literary world.
