Kazakh tennis player Elena Rybakina said ahead of Wimbledon that she is not fixated on the possibility of topping the WTA rankings after the tournament. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kazinform.
According to the athlete, it is more important for her now to gradually improve her game rather than think about her ranking position.
"It would be amazing. But honestly, I don't think about it too much because my previous results were not as good as I wanted. Now it's important for me to try to improve from match to match and move step by step," Rybakina said.
The tennis player also said that during preparation for the grass season, the main focus was on physical fitness and adapting her game to the surface's characteristics.
"From a physical preparation standpoint, we are working on playing with a lower stance. I think on grass it's very important to play aggressively from the first shots and take any opportunity to seize the initiative. We worked a lot on this, and after Roland Garros I had enough time to prepare. I hope we worked well. We'll see how it goes at this tournament. But I think it all starts with physical preparation, and then adaptation on the court follows," she noted.
Recalling her Wimbledon victory in 2022, Rybakina admitted that she did not expect to win the title at the time, and experience in the decisive stages of tournaments helped her handle such situations more calmly.
"When I won here in 2022, I didn't expect it at all because I didn't have any outstanding results before. Everything happened completely unexpectedly. Of course, I had never gone that far in the draw before. Starting from the quarterfinals and semifinals, I was very nervous. It was harder to sleep because you don't know what to expect next. There were a lot of emotions. But I am incredibly proud that I managed to handle them and win this title. After that, you already know the path, understand what to expect, and not much can surprise you," the athlete said.
Additionally, the world No. 2 said she regularly reviews recordings of her matches to analyze her game and find ways to improve specific elements.
"Yes, I review some videos — especially certain moments when something worked well. If some detail in the game isn't working now, it's always useful to go back and see what I might have done differently before. It doesn't have to be matches from that winning tournament. It could be a match from a year ago or any other moment when something worked better. Or just to see what progress has been made. So yes, we always try to review videos and analyze our game," Rybakina added.
In the first round of Wimbledon, the Kazakh player will face Frenchwoman Lois Boisson. The 23-year-old Frenchwoman is ranked 154th in the WTA rankings and will play against Rybakina at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
