World No. 2 Elena Rybakina started the Wimbledon tournament with a victory, a tournament she won in 2022. In the first round, the Kazakhstani player defeated France's Lois Boisson (154) 6:4, 1:6, 6:3. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
After a brilliant victory at the Australian Open 2026, the clay and, to a greater extent, grass seasons did not go well for Rybakina. She lost half of her last ten matches, especially to opponents with not the highest rankings.
Rybakina started the match against 23-year-old Boisson confidently, leading 40:0 on the opponent's serve. Then, in full accordance with recent trends, she lost three points in a row. However, she managed to break and then confirm it – 2:0. The two-game advantage lasted until the end of the set, as the opponents held their serves thereafter – 6:4.
The second set, as often happens in this unsuccessful stretch of the season, was a complete failure for the Kazakhstani. An incredible number of unforced errors combined with a disappeared serve led to a very unpleasant result – 1:6.
In rare moments, Elena played brilliantly, demonstrating high skill. However, the lack of a solid return and regular mistakes in simple situations nullified all her efforts.
Nevertheless, in the third set, Rybakina prevailed. Breaking in the eighth game, Elena confirmed it and ended the match on the first match point after 1 hour 47 minutes – 6:4, 1:6, 6:3. Ace count – 6:3. Total points won – 82:79.
In the second round, our tennis player, seeded second, will face either Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse (71) or American Katie McNally (50).
The day before, on the first day of Wimbledon, Kazakhstan lost two of its representatives in singles. Alexander Shevchenko and Yulia Putintseva performed poorly at the start of the Grand Slam tournament. Yulia, like Alexander Bublik, will also compete in doubles.
Other results from the first days include the victory of world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus over Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic (184) – 6:2, 6:3. Roland Garros 2026 champion Mirra Andreeva (5) of Russia defeated Poland's Magda Linette (59) – 7:5, 6:4. Putintseva's doubles partner Leylah Fernandez (24) of Canada lost to Indonesia's Janice Tjen (42) – 1:6, 6:7 (1:7).
The Wimbledon Championships 2026 are taking place in London from June 29 to July 12. It is the third Grand Slam tournament of the season and the only one on grass.
The prize fund is £64.2 million (up 20% from last year). Champions and finalists in singles will receive £3.6 million and £1.8 million, respectively.
The main draw of Wimbledon, like the other three majors, includes 128 players in singles, 64 pairs in doubles, and 32 in mixed doubles.
The reigning Wimbledon champions are Italy's Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
