Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina (2) failed to cope with Iga Swiatek (8) from Poland in the final match of the Canadian Open – 2:6, 3:6. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The six-time Grand Slam champion, who until recently was actively competing for the lead in the WTA rankings, is now only in 8th place. However, judging by the game shown in Toronto, the crisis of the Warsaw native is behind her. Having confidently passed the tournament distance, Swiatek was unstoppable in the final.
Having made two breaks in each set, Iga did not give Rybakina a single serve and won her 31st title. She again took the lead in the head-to-head confrontation with Elena – 7:6.
Rybakina, after a prolonged crisis that occurred after her victory in Stuttgart, reached the final for the first time. But she again demonstrated that the problems with her serve, once the main trump card of the Kazakhstani, have not gone away. As well as psychological ones – there are still many unforced errors.
The match with Swiatek ended after 1 hour 14 minutes with a score close to devastating – 2:6, 3:6. The score of aces – 4:1, double faults – 1:0, all points won – 41:56.
Under certain circumstances, Rybakina could have become the world's first racket by winning in Toronto. It did not work out. The solution to the task is postponed to the end of the season – the next WTA-1000 tournament in Cincinnati, the US Open and the Year-End Championships.
The Canadian Open tennis tournament has a history since 1881. In even years, the women's tournament is held in Toronto, the men's in Montreal. Since 2011, these hard-court competitions, part of the US Open Series, have been held simultaneously.
Over the years, the tournament has been won by Americans Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Serena Williams. Also German Steffi Graf, Swiss Martina Hingis, Belgians Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo and other stars.
In doubles, the Toronto-2026 trophy went to the Czech-Chinese pair Katerina Siniakova (1)/Zhang Shuai (8), who defeated Italian Sara Errani (11) and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez (12) in the final – 6:3, 6:4.
