ASTANA, August 25 – Sputnik. New rules for electric scooters came into force in Kazakhstan on August 25, 2026. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
New rules
Now it is forbidden to ride electric scooters on sidewalks and pedestrian paths. If there is a bicycle path or lane, you must ride only on them. If they are absent, it is allowed to ride on the right edge of the roadway or on the roadside in accordance with traffic rules.
Requirements for drivers
"On the roadway, electric scooters are allowed only for persons who have reached 18 years of age, have a driver's license of the appropriate category and use a protective helmet. Moped drivers are obliged to move only on the roadway. When crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, owners of scooters, bicycles and mopeds must get off and walk their vehicle. It is forbidden to carry passengers, use a phone without holding the handlebars, and also ride in the dark without reflective elements," the Prosecutor General's Office warned.
Accident statistics
The supervisory authority noted that as the popularity of this type of transport grows, the number of accidents also increases.
"Since the beginning of the year, 390 accidents were registered due to the fault of moped drivers, in which 33 people died and 461 more were injured. Due to the fault of cyclists – 169, due to the fault of drivers of small electric vehicles – 97, due to the fault of electric scooter drivers – 47 accidents. In all these incidents, 329 minors were injured, 10 children died," the Prosecutor General's Office reported.
Safety measures
In addition, users of vehicles themselves often suffer in accidents. "As a result of collisions with electric scooter drivers, four people died, and about 300 more received various injuries," the supervisory authority reported.
Driving at high speed in crowded places poses a particular danger. Car drivers should also be extremely careful. When passing intersections, courtyards, pedestrian crossings and places where scooter and bicycle users may appear, it is necessary to reduce speed and be prepared for sudden changes in the road situation.
