Egypt opened the scoring in the 13th minute. After a blocked shot by Emam Ashour, Karim Hafez quickly returned the ball into the box, and Ashour, avoiding offside, headed it into the corner of the net.
Australia equalized early in the second half. In the 55th minute, Aiden O'Neill delivered a free kick from the left flank, and Mohamed Hany mishandled the ball in the six-yard box, deflecting it into his own net.
Late in regular time, Egypt nearly snatched victory, but Patrick Beach saved Australia after a header from Rami Rabia. Extra time passed without goals, and before the penalty shootout, Australia's coaching staff brought on Matthew Ryan to replace Beach.
