The police department of Almaty region has addressed owners of cars imported from the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union with a reminder that the temporary registration period is coming to an end. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

The department advises to check the validity of registration and vehicle documents in advance. If the temporary registration is about to expire, owners are asked not to postpone the issue and to clarify in advance the procedure for further use of the vehicle.

The police also reminded that the operation of the car must comply with the requirements of the legislation of Kazakhstan.

The temporary registration program started in July 2023. It applied to cars imported into Kazakhstan before September 1, 2022, which could not be legalized because they were not deregistered in the country of previous registration or had other restrictions.

Such owners were allowed to put cars on temporary registration for a period of five years in order to settle their legal status during this time.

When registering temporary registration, a note "without the right of alienation and departure from the Republic of Kazakhstan" was made in the certificate. Foreign license plates and registration documents were transferred for storage to the state corporation "Government for Citizens".

After the expiration of the five-year period, temporary registration is terminated automatically. This measure was a continuation of the campaign to legalize foreign cars, which took place in Kazakhstan from January 23 to July 1, 2023.

Earlier, Kursiv Auto reported that cars without registration are being detected in the Turkestan region.

What should owners do?

Car owners are recommended to take the following steps in connection with the expiration of the temporary registration period:

  • 01Check the expiration date of the registration;
  • 02Ensure that all necessary documents are available;
  • 03Contact the relevant authorities to clarify the procedure for further use of the car.

Legislative requirements

The police department emphasized that the operation of the car must comply with the requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Violation of these requirements may entail administrative liability.

Significance of the program

The temporary registration program was part of the campaign to legalize foreign cars. It allowed to regulate the legal status of cars imported before September 1, 2022, but not legalized for various reasons.

Additional information

After the expiration of the temporary registration period, owners may need to consider other ways to legalize the car. Full information on this issue can be obtained from the relevant state bodies.
