The level of food self-sufficiency in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has reached 94%, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Overchuk stated that agricultural production in the union countries has increased by nearly a third in real terms, mutual trade has grown 2.7 times, and exports have risen 2.5 times. This was reported by the press service of the Russian government, quoting the deputy prime minister.
He noted that the EAEU has transformed from a net importer of food into a stable net exporter. Special attention was paid to the level of food self-sufficiency, which currently stands at approximately 94%.
The EAEU fully meets the basic needs for key products: grain, meat, milk, sugar, vegetable oils, and eggs. The Russian deputy prime minister emphasized that the union countries hold leading positions in global markets, especially for wheat and frozen fish.
According to Alexei Overchuk, in the current situation, the EAEU serves as a "safe haven" for food security. He outlined two key priorities of the long-term strategy for developing the EAEU's agricultural sector: first, ensuring internal stability and food security for member states, and second, creating conditions for the active entry of agricultural products into external markets.
Among practical steps, Overchuk mentioned the formation of a supranational mechanism for financing cooperative projects in agriculture. It is planned to fully develop the necessary regulatory framework and launch such projects by the end of 2026.
