Kazakhstan's Financial Monitoring Agency checked information about apartments in Dubai belonging to relatives of convicted Perizat Kairat and stated that the assumption they were bought with criminally obtained funds was not confirmed. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The check was prompted by information published in one of the anonymous Telegram channels that several apartments in Dubai belong to Perizat Kairat's relatives.
Agency statement
"Earlier, the Financial Monitoring Agency checked the assumption that the said persons could have purchased real estate with money obtained by P. Kairat through criminal means. However, this assumption was not confirmed," the agency said.
According to the agency, during the investigation all financial operations were comprehensively analysed and the entire chain of legalisation of embezzled money was identified.
The agency also noted that it was not established that A. and his family members conducted any financial settlements with Perizat Kairat's family.
When the property was purchased
The real estate mentioned in the publications was purchased in 2011-2019, that is, before the "Biz Birgemiz Qazaqstan 2030" fund was created and before Perizat Kairat engaged in criminal activity.
According to the agency, a citizen named A. and his spouse have been engaged in buying and reselling real estate for more than 20 years.
They lived separately from Perizat Kairat and her mother and conducted their business activities independently.
Reminder on legal grounds
The Financial Monitoring Agency recalled that under Article 161 of the Criminal Procedure Code, blocking and confiscation of property require evidence confirming its criminal origin.
"The mere fact of family ties with suspects cannot be a legal basis for bringing a person to criminal responsibility and confiscating their property," the agency noted.
The Perizat Kairat case
Recall that Perizat Kairat embezzled funds collected for charity and spent them on buying cars and apartments.
She also renovated the apartments and furnished them.
With the fund's money she bought clothes and jewellery of expensive brands, flew business class, stayed in fashionable hotels, and spent money on restaurants and entertainment venues.
By court verdict, Perizat Kairat was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
