WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on social media platform X that the outbreak of Andes hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius has ended. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

According to him, the last passenger of the MV Hondius completed the quarantine period, tested negative for hantavirus, and returned home.

No new cases have been registered since May 25.

"WHO considers the hantavirus outbreak over," added the WHO chief.

The outbreak, which resulted in 13 infections and three deaths, was caused by the Andes virus, a rare strain of hantavirus.

Earlier, it was reported that the number of hantavirus cases on the MV Hondius had risen to 13 by the end of May, with three deaths, according to WHO. A new case was then detected in Spain among passengers who were in quarantine.

Additionally, Kursiv reported that the first doses of an experimental antiviral drug for treating hantavirus were planned to be sent to France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
