Kazakhstan's Anna Danilina and Serbia's Alexandra Krunic defeated the Ukrainian duo of Angelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska 2:6, 6:4, 6:0 in the second round of Wimbledon. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The match on Wimbledon's Court No. 3 started difficultly for the Moscow-born players. Yastremska (from Odesa) and Kalinina (from Kakhovka) took a 3:0 lead and confidently won the first set 6:2. In the second set, the experience of three-time Grand Slam runners-up showed, as they secured three breaks against two from their opponents to win 6:4.
In the deciding set, Anna and Alexandra's dominance was clear. Having established their usual coordination, they won six consecutive games, handing their opponents a "bagel" – 2:6, 6:4, 6:0.
The opponents for the Kazakh-Serbian duo in the quarterfinal match of the doubles draw will be determined later. Danilina is also scheduled for a second-round mixed doubles match on July 5.
On July 4, Kazakhstan's representation at Wimbledon lost its main force. World No. 2 Elena Rybakina unexpectedly fell to Belgium's Elise Mertens 6:7 (4:7), 1:6.
Poland's Iga Swiatek, ranked third in the world, also suffered a defeat. The 2025 Wimbledon champion lost to the Philippines' Alexandra Eala (32) 6:7 (9:11), 2:6.
Tomorrow, Kazakh juniors Zangar Nurlanuly and Damir Zhalgasbay will enter the competition.
The Wimbledon Championships 2026 are taking place in London from June 29 to July 12. It is the third Grand Slam tournament of the season and the only one on grass.
The prize fund is £64.2 million. Champions and finalists in singles receive £3.6 million and £1.8 million respectively.
The reigning Wimbledon champions are Italy's Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. Sinner defeated American Jenson Brooksby (81) 6:4, 6:3, 6:4 to reach the fourth round. Swiatek, as mentioned, exited the tournament in the round of 16.
