Kazakhstani tennis player Anna Danilina (6) and Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic (5) have finished their run at the 2026 US Open in the women's doubles draw. In the second-round match, the third-seeded duo retired during the second set against Germany's Tatjana Maria and Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Danilina and Krunic confidently played the first set and won it 6:1. In the second set, the battle was much tighter. At 5:6, the Kazakh-Serbian pair decided not to continue. The match lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The reason for the withdrawal was an injury to Krunic. At 4:5, the Serb jumped for an overhead shot and after landing fell to the court, clutching her left knee. Medical staff provided assistance and applied a bandage, after which Krunic attempted to continue playing.
She played a few more points, but at 5:6, while moving forward on a return, her injured leg gave way again. After that, Danilina and Krunic decided to stop the match. Krunic left the court in tears.
The Kazakh and the Serb had a successful season at Grand Slam tournaments. In 2026, they reached the Australian Open final and then played in the decisive match at Roland Garros for the second consecutive year.
