Kazakhstani Anna Danilina (6) and Japanese Miyu Kato (43) lost to the Russian-British pair Maria Kozyreva (60)/Maya Lumsden (49) 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:10 in the quarterfinals of the WTA-500 tournament in Monterrey. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Having successfully passed the first round, the new Kazakh-Japanese tandem literally snatched the second set in the second. Trailing 5:6 on the tiebreak, Anna and Miyu won three consecutive points – 8:6.
The first set was unsuccessful, and on the super tiebreak Danilina and Kato faced a real failure. Coming back from 1:6 was physically impossible. The result – 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:10 in 1 hour 36 minutes. Total points won – 68:78.
Danilina heads from Monterrey to New York, where she will reunite with her regular partner Aleksandra Krunic (5). The Serb, in tandem with Croatian Mate Pavic (7), did not find success in the mixed doubles at US Open 2026.
Kazakhstanis did not participate in the million-dollar mixed doubles. Alexandra Bublik's partner Venus Williams withdrew due to injury. As did Elena Rybakina, who was supposed to play with Taylor Fritz. Elena's participation in the singles draw of US Open 2026, having injured her Achilles in Cincinnati, is also in question.
However, even without playing a single match at the American major, Rybakina could become the world No. 1 for the first time in history. For this, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, or Coco Gauff must not win US Open 2026.
