Over the past two years, more than 502.6 million tenge has been paid to patients and their families as insurance payments under mandatory professional liability insurance for medical workers. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

The Ministry of Health reported this. The law "On Insurance of Professional Liability of Medical Workers" came into force in October 2024. As of September 1, 2026, 178,296 medical workers are insured.

Of these, 155,856 work in state medical organizations, and another 22,440 in private organizations.

Insurance contracts

Since the beginning of the year, medical organizations have concluded 1,867 insurance contracts.

"This mechanism allows a patient to receive an insurance payment if harm to their life and health during the provision of medical care is confirmed, and provides medical workers with financial protection from relevant risks," the ministry says.

Explanation for patients

According to them, if a patient or their legal representative believes that harm was caused to their life and health during the provision of medical care, they have the right to apply to the medical organization.

Experts study medical documentation and cases of medical care provision.

When an insured event is confirmed, the insurance payment is made to the patient or their representative by the insurance organization in the manner established by law.

"At the same time, the patient does not need to recover the specified amount directly from the medical worker," the statement says.

Protection for medical workers

Insurance also provides financial protection for medical workers: insurance is carried out at the expense of the medical organization, and when an insured event occurs, the payment within established limits is made by the insurance company.

Thus, this mechanism allows resolving cases of confirmed harm in the manner established by law.

The patient receives an insurance payment, and the medical worker is protected from the need to compensate it from their own funds.
