Group A, Matchday 2, June 18, 21:00, Atlanta, Mercedes-Benz Stadium
CZECH REPUBLIC – SOUTH AFRICA 1:1 (1:0) Goals: Sadilek 6 (1:0), Mokoena 83-pen (1:1)
The match in Atlanta started almost perfectly for the Czech Republic. In the 1st minute, Patrik Schick had a chance at Ronwen Williams' goal but failed to adjust to the ball. In the 6th minute, the Czechs scored: after a long throw-in, Adam Hlozek crossed from the right, Alexandr Sojka touched the ball to Sadilek, who fired a powerful shot past Williams.
After the early goal, the game gradually lost pace. The Czech Republic tried to control the match but played cautiously and rarely created real chances. South Africa, missing the suspended Sfiso Sithole and Themba Zwane, had more possession in spells but could not turn it into opportunities.
In the second half, the Czechs could have sealed the match. In the 47th minute, Lukáš Červ struck powerfully from outside the box, but Williams saved. Later, Ladislav Krejčí headed dangerously from a corner but missed the target.
South Africa waited for their chance and got it late. In the 81st minute, Thapelo Maseko moved along the edge of the box and hit the ball against Pavel Šulc's hand. Referee Tori Penso awarded a penalty. Mokoena calmly slotted into the left corner, while Matěj Kovář dived the other way – 1:1.
For both teams, this draw was their first point of the tournament. The Czech Republic lost to South Korea in the first round, while South Africa lost to Mexico. Both teams still have a chance to advance, but they remain in a chasing position before the final round.
In the other Group A match, Mexico will play South Korea. Also tonight, two Group B matches will take place: Switzerland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Canada vs. Qatar.
