A BYD Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid was completely burned after a multi-vehicle accident in Chengdu, China. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Video footage of the incident quickly spread on social media. According to the owner, he and the front passenger briefly lost consciousness after the collision. Despite the deployment of front and side airbags, the doors were locked. They managed to escape through the side windows moments before the fire engulfed the cabin.
Preliminary reports indicate no fatalities among the BYD occupants. The condition of participants from other vehicles has not been officially disclosed.
The owner claims the fire started in the rear of the sedan shortly after the impact. However, this is only his observation. Investigators are determining the source of the fire and whether it is related to the fuel system, electrical components, or other parts of the vehicle.
The BYD Qin Plus DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a gasoline engine and a traction battery. It differs externally from the fully electric Qin Plus EV by its large radiator grille.
In March, a BYD Seal electric sedan caught fire after an accident in Hong Kong. In all cases, the causes of the fires were determined during investigations.
Despite the incident, the Qin Plus family remains one of BYD's most popular models. According to China EV DataTracker, in June 2026, sales of the electric Qin Plus EV reached 13,700 units, making it the brand's fourth most popular model.
Previously, Kursiv Avto reported another accident involving BYD and Mazda vehicles, where the Chinese hybrid did not catch fire, while the Japanese car ignited after the collision.
