Former New York Mets player Butch Huskey has died at the age of 54. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
Huskey played seven major league seasons and was one of the last players to wear No. 42 before it was permanently retired. He was 54.
The New York Mets said Huskey died because of a blood clot in his lung.
"We are saddened to learn about the passing of former Met Butch Huskey," the Mets said in a statement on Friday.
Huskey played for the Mets from 1996 to 1998, then went on to play for the Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, and Boston Red Sox. He is remembered for his home run in the third inning against the Houston Astros on March 20, 1996, at Osceola County Stadium in Florida.
On March 31, 1998, at Shea Stadium in the opening game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Huskey scored the winning run after Alberto Castillo's game-winning single in the 14th inning, securing a victory for the Mets.
Huskey's death has brought great sorrow to the baseball world. He was known for his powerful hitting and team spirit.
