BTA Bank, once one of the largest commercial banks in the country, officially ceased its banking activities in June 2015, voluntarily surrendering its license to the National Bank of Kazakhstan as part of restructuring and merger with Kazkommertsbank. Its main owner, according to the 2024 reporting, remains Kazakhstani millionaire Kenes Rakishev, who ranks 27th in the Forbes ranking of the richest businessmen in Kazakhstan with a fortune of $402 million.
Currently, BTA Bank operates not as a classical financial institution, but as a non-banking investment and management company focused on the collection and restructuring of problem assets.
As part of optimizing the asset structure, BTA has systematically exited foreign banking businesses. In 2024, the sale of 99.93% of shares of the Belarusian CJSC "BTA Bank" (later renamed Neo Bank Asia) was completed, and in the summer of 2025, the sale of the Ukrainian subsidiary of BTA to local investors was approved.
