Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil's presidential election, has left for the United States with his family and said he intends to lead the opposition from abroad. In a "letter to the Brazilian people" published on X, he accused the authorities of falsification. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Initially, the politician called himself the "true president" and "elected president" of Brazil. Later he deleted those formulations and published a version of the address in which he declared himself "leader of Brazil."
Bolsonaro claims that the victory of incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was the result of a "disgusting election fraud." He accused the judicial system of corruption and promised to fight for democracy from abroad to prevent his rival from establishing a "dictatorial regime."
Lula's victory was recognized by Brazil's electoral authorities, international observers and Bolsonaro's own party.
Bolsonaro arrived in Florida with his wife Fernanda and two daughters. Their plane landed in Miami. Before that, the family's whereabouts had been unknown for more than a day.
According to Argentina's migration authorities, the family entered the country through the Tancredo Neves border crossing. The agency said all four presented valid documents and there were no legal obstacles to their entry. They then went to Ecuador, from where they flew to the United States.
In his address, Bolsonaro thanked the presidents of Argentina and the United States, Javier Milei and Donald Trump, for their support.
On October 26, Brazil's Supreme Court banned the senator from leaving the country and ordered him to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports. The order is linked to investigations into suspected financial crimes.
One of the cases concerns the financing of a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The investigation is also checking possible illegal financing of the election campaign. The senator himself rejects the accusations.
The second round of the presidential election took place on October 25. Lula da Silva received 51.79% of the votes, Flavio Bolsonaro — 48.21%.
Bolsonaro did not recognize the voting results and demanded they be annulled. However, on October 26, his Liberal Party recognized defeat.
