Brazilian authorities annulled the passports of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who failed to surrender the documents as ordered by the Supreme Court after his presidential election defeat. Police are trying to locate him. According to the latest Reuters sources, the politician has left the country and headed to the United States. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
On October 26, the court gave Bolsonaro 24 hours to hand over his passports to the police and banned him from leaving Brazil. The decision is linked to an investigation into alleged money laundering. The senator denies any wrongdoing.
«I was ordered right on the street to hand over my passports, and also banned from leaving the country,» Bolsonaro said on social media, promising to comply with the demand. However, he did not hand over the documents on time.
According to police, the senator did not leave through official immigration control points. It is unknown where exactly he is and whether he intends to seek asylum in the United States.
Earlier, «Kursiv» reported that in the second round of the presidential election on October 25, Flávio Bolsonaro lost to the 80-year-old incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The senator refused to concede defeat and said he would seek to annul the results due to alleged irregularities. At the same time, his Liberal Party has already recognized Lula's victory.
Flávio is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who also left for the United States after his defeat in the 2022 election and later returned to Brazil. He was later sentenced to 27 years in prison in the case of an attempted coup. Later, Congress supported a bill to reduce the sentence, which sparked protests. The release of his father became one of Flávio's campaign promises.
