Brazil is heading to historic presidential elections this Sunday. The son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro hopes to take power. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing The Guardian.

You would have been forgiven for thinking that when Jair Bolsonaro was convicted in September 2025 of attempting a coup, his political career was finished and his legacy forever tainted. But in the first round of Brazil's presidential elections this Sunday, another Bolsonaro has genuine hopes of victory – not Jair, but his son Flávio, who is also campaigning to have his father released.

The Guardian's Latin America correspondent, Tom Phillips, explains how Brazil got here again, and tells Annie Kelly what it will mean for the wider region if Flávio Bolsonaro wins.

The podcast is presented by Annie Kelly with Tom Phillips; produced by Guy Szafman and Brian McNamara; executive producer Sami Kent and Homa Khaleeli. The episode was published on Friday 2 October 2026.

In this episode, listeners hear how Brazil's political landscape is once again defined by the Bolsonaro name, the campaign of a son seeking to carry on his father's political legacy, and the regional implications of the election. The episode is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or via RSS.
