Artificial intelligence could be used to cause harm on an unprecedented scale. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates made the statement in an interview with NBC News. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Gates warned that people with malicious intent could use the latest AI tools to trigger events capable of leading to the deaths of a billion people.
"AI is certainly powerful enough to manage events that, you know, lead to a billion deaths. You know, even though it's quite difficult to reach 100%, there has never been such a powerful weapon as the combination of people with malicious intent using the latest AI tools," Gates said.
According to the businessman, developers should not determine all safety rules on their own. He called on US authorities to adopt mandatory requirements for AI control and to involve legislators and law enforcement agencies in the discussion.
"Nobody thinks self-regulation is enough," Gates said.
He added that mandatory control will require additional costs from companies, but should not significantly slow down the development of the technology. NBC News plans to show the full version of the interview on September 27.
