Belgium and Egypt played out a 1-1 draw in the first round of Group G at the 2026 World Cup. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The match took place at Lumen Field in Seattle, USA, on June 15.
Goals: Mohamed Hany, 66 (own goal) – Emam Ashour, 19.
Egypt started the game more confidently and opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Mohamed Salah received the ball on the right flank, moved towards the penalty area, and passed to Emam Ashour for a shot. The midfielder struck from outside the box precisely into the corner, leaving the Belgian goalkeeper with no chance.
After conceding, Belgium took control and began to threaten the opponent's goal more frequently. The most dangerous moments before the break came from set pieces and crosses into the box, but Egypt's defense and goalkeeper coped with the pressure, maintaining a minimal lead at halftime.
In the second half, Belgium continued to attack and intensified pressure after Romelu Lukaku came on. In the 66th minute, his active play led to the equalizer: after a cross into the box, Egypt defender Mohamed Hany deflected the ball into his own net, restoring parity.
In the remaining time, Belgium were closer to victory, but Egypt's defense held firm. Ultimately, the teams shared the points, each earning one point in the opening round of Group G.
Despite the result, Mohamed Salah provided an assist on his birthday. However, Egypt again failed to secure their first-ever World Cup win. Later, Group G will see a match between Iran and New Zealand.
