Most victims sustained bruises from flying debris or were knocked down by hurricane-force winds. Two female tourists on the resort island of Miyako were swept away by waves but managed to reach shore, sustaining injuries.
Wind speeds in the typhoon area exceed 40 m/s, with gusts reaching 55 m/s in some places. Such winds can overturn a passenger car. The squall is accompanied by heavy downpours. Authorities warn of flood and landslide risks.
Bavi is moving across Okinawa northwestward toward the coast of China.
