Nikoloz Basilashvili has reached the final of the Almaty Open-2026, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets – 6:4, 6:7 (5:7), 6:3. The Georgian started the tournament from qualifying and has now secured his sixth consecutive victory in Almaty. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Match progress
Basilashvili won the first set thanks to a single break, but in the second set he failed to convert several opportunities on his opponent's serve. Tsitsipas forced a tie-break and leveled the score, but in the decisive set the Georgian made another break and closed out the match.
Basilashvili's comments
After the match, Basilashvili noted that the key factor was his own serve and converting the few chances he had on return.
"I played a good match. I think I played my service games very well, and every time I had an opportunity on his serve, I used it.
In the second set I had many break points. I got a little tight, so I think that's why I lost the second set in the tie-break. But I'm glad I managed to refocus on my serve and then use the chances when they came," Nikoloz said.
Tournament path
Basilashvili began his campaign at the Almaty Open from qualifying. There he defeated Taro Daniel and Adam Walton, after which in the main draw he successively beat Marin Cilic, Facundo Diaz Acosta, Adrian Mannarino and Tsitsipas.
For the former world No. 16, this is his first ATP final since February 2022, when he reached the title match in Doha.
Basilashvili himself noted that he already has experience of a long path through qualifying.
"I assess my performance very well. In my career, there have already been two occasions when I came through qualifying and won an ATP tournament, so I have the experience. Physically I'm not tired, even though I've already played six matches. I'll just keep moving forward."
Historic victory
One of those cases occurred in 2018 in Hamburg. At that time, Basilashvili started the ATP 500 from qualifying, played seven matches and defeated Leonardo Mayer in the final – 6:4, 0:6, 7:5, claiming the first ATP title of his career.
Before the final
Basilashvili's opponent in the final will be determined in the match between Alexander Bublik and the current Almaty Open champion Daniil Medvedev.
The Georgian believes that against either of them, the quality of his own serve and return will play a key role.
"Both guys serve great. I need to stay focused on my serve and on the return. Both are currently showing top-level tennis and are in good form, so the match will be really tough. I already have a game plan against each of them, so we'll see how it goes," Basilashvili concluded.
