The court of Akmola region explained why Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, convicted in the case of ex-minister Kuandyk Bishimbayev, was released early. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The Stepnogorsk city court considered a proposal to reduce the unserved portion of the main sentence for Baizhanov. The court found that Baizhanov was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment by the specialized inter-district court for criminal cases of Astana on May 13, 2024, and served his sentence in a medium-security facility.
According to the department, in accordance with paragraph 4 of Article 2 of the law "On Amnesty in Connection with the Adoption of the New Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan," persons convicted of a grave or especially grave crime, whose behavior is not assessed as negative, and who have no more than one year left until the end of their sentence during the period of amnesty, have the unserved part of the main sentence reduced. The unserved sentence of the convict was 3 months and 18 days.
During the court session, the convict Baizhanov did not object to the application of the amnesty act. He was released from prison. The ruling has not entered into legal force.
