Bangkok has declared a disaster zone after three days of heavy rain. Nearly 300 mm of rain fell in Thailand's capital over three days. Water overflowed canals, flooded roads and entered homes. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Disaster status extended to all districts
According to the country's government press service, the disaster status was extended to all 50 districts of Bangkok.
Since Thursday, nearly 300 mm of precipitation has fallen in Bangkok. According to Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, the eastern part of the city was hit hardest.
"We are trying to pump out the water, but the canals are overflowing," AFP quotes the governor as saying.
Residents take precautions
In some places, water entered homes and businesses near the canals. In the On Nut area, residents waded through a flooded road where the water reached their knees and collected sandbags to protect their homes.
City authorities instructed district services to prepare temporary shelters in schools, assist residents with limited mobility and manage traffic on flooded streets. People whose property was damaged are advised to keep photographs of the damage for applying for assistance.
