Another day of the Asian Games athletics tournament brought no success for Kazakhstani athletes. Maria Shuvalova finished seventh in the 400 metres, Ivan Ivanov placed ninth in the shot put, and Ayana Bolatbekkyzy came tenth in the 1500 metres. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Ivanov fails to reach the top eight in shot put

Ivanov, the bronze medallist at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, fouled two attempts in the shot put and failed to make the top eight athletes who were entitled to three more attempts. The result of 18.46 shown by the Kazakhstani is not only worse than his personal best (20.95) but also below his best achievement of the current season (19.41). To win, Ivanov needed to throw the shot in the region of his personal best.

In the history of the Asian Games, Kazakhstani athletes have reached the podium three times in the shot put. Besides the aforementioned bronze of Ivanov, Sergei Rubtsov won silver at Hiroshima 1994. He also finished third at Bangkok 1998.

🥇 1. Mohammadreza TAYEBISE (Iran) – 20.81 (Asian Games record)

🥈 2. Tajinderpal Singh TOOR (India) – 20.64

🥉 3. Mohammed TOOLO (Saudi Arabia) – 20.48

Bolatbekkyzy finishes second to last in heavy rain

Middle-distance runner Ayana Bolatbekkyzy finished second to last in the 1500 metres under torrential rain. The heavy precipitation did not prevent Nelly Korir of Bahrain from setting an Asian Games record.

🥇 1. Nelly KORIR (Bahrain) – 4:04.50 (Asian Games record)

…10. Ayana BOLATBEKKYZY (Kazakhstan) – 4:30.27

Shuvalova finishes seventh in the final

Maria Shuvalova in the 400 metres final fell 0.5 seconds short of her best achievement and finished seventh. She would not have been able to catch Salwa Naser, who won the final by a huge margin and set a new Games record, under any circumstances. But bronze with Maria's achieved result of 53.09 was within reach.

🥇 1. Salwa NASER (Bahrain) – 49.20 (Asian Games record)

🥈 2. Zahra ZAREI MANOUJAN (Iran) – 52.38

In the women's 400 metres, Kazakhstan has won six medals at the Asian Games. Olga Tereshkova won gold twice (2006, 2010), and Svetlana Bodritskaya won bronze (1998, 2002). Marina Maslenko (2010) and Yelena Mikhina (2018) also finished third.
