The ninth day of the Asian Games medal program did not bring Kazakhstan's team any gold medals. However, the country's athletes came very close. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Weightlifting: one kilogram short

Weightlifter Alexey Churkin, who became vice-champion of the Games in the up to 85 kg category, lost to the gold medalist by just one kilogram. His teammate on the weightlifting team, Nurgisa Adiletuly (up to 95 kg), who also won silver, fell 4 kg behind the winner.

Athletics: Adelina Zems snatched second place

Track and field athlete Adelina Zems literally snatched second place in the 400 meters hurdles with a finishing sprint. Here too, the gap from the leader was not too critical.

Interestingly, Adelina's husband Vyacheslav Zems ran in the final of the same distance, but among men, shortly after his wife finished. However, unlike her, he did not earn any podium laurels. Zems ultimately took eighth place, while javelin thrower Alexey Khlystov, who concluded the program of our track and field athletes today, finished 11th.

Bronze medals: artistic swimming and kurash

Kazakhstan's bronze haul was also not rich today. The country's artistic swimming team finished third in the mixed team competition. Its lineup included Nargiza Bolatova, Viktor Druzin, Aigerim Kurmangaliyeva, Karina Magrupova, Ksenia Makarova, Anna Pavletsova, Valeria Stolbunova, Yasmin Tuyakova, Dayana Dzhamanchalova and Zhaklin Yakimova.

Adilet Akhmetgali stepped onto the podium in the up to 81 kg weight category in kurash wrestling.

Boxing: four boxers in the semifinals

A quartet of Kazakhstan's boxing team representatives advanced to the semifinals. Alua Balkibekova (51 kg), Natalya Bogdanova (75 kg), Torekhan Sabyrkhan (70 kg) and Makhmud Sabyrkhan (55 kg) won their quarterfinal bouts and guaranteed themselves at least bronze medals. Nurbek Oralbay (90 kg), however, finished his performance, losing the quarterfinal by a split decision of the judges.

Athletics: Jeruto fifth, Kepkemei seventh

Naturalized Kenyan runner Nora Jeruto took fifth place in the 5,000 meters. Her teammate Jacy Kepkemei finished seventh in the same race.

Water polo and volleyball

Kazakhstan's water polo players crushed Thailand and advanced to the quarterfinals from second place in the group. The men's volleyball team, losing to Japan in three sets, went on to contest places from 9th to 16th.

Tennis: doubles victories

Kazakhstan's tennis players, who flew to Japan from the BJK Cup final in China, secured another victory in the women's doubles.

NOC clarification: Toksanbayeva's disqualification

The NOC of Kazakhstan clarified the situation with the disqualification of Yasmina Toksanbayeva, who finished first in the marathon race walking. The reason was the model of the athlete's shoes, which was not on the World Athletics approved list.

Medal standings

After the ninth day of the Asian Games, Kazakhstan in the unofficial medal standings is already three gold medals behind Uzbekistan. Thailand and Bahrain are already eyeing the fifth place held by our team. And Iran is not far away either.

The XX Summer Asian Games in Japan officially opened on September 19. The multi-sport competition, featuring athletes from 45 countries, will award 460 sets of medals. 217 among men, 204 among women and 39 in mixed categories.
