Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev participated in a high-level session titled 'Nuclear Energy in a Changing World: New Opportunities for Cooperation' held as part of the IV International Youth Nuclear Forum 'Obninsk NEW'. In his speech, Almasadam Satkaliyev noted that the development of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan is a natural and evolutionary stage based on the scientific legacy of previous generations of scientists, achievements of domestic and Soviet scientific schools, as well as the accumulated scientific, technical and industrial potential of the country.
He emphasized that Kazakhstan has one of the largest uranium reserves in the world, is a global leader in natural uranium production, and has unique experience in the construction, operation and decommissioning of the BN-350 fast neutron reactor in Aktau.
In addition, the country has a developed research infrastructure. The head of the agency noted that Kazakhstan has formed a significant scientific potential in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy.
The National Nuclear Center and the Institute of Nuclear Physics have research reactors, accelerator complexes and the experience necessary for conducting scientific research and developing modern nuclear technologies.
Kazakhstan is also actively developing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), international research centers and foreign partners, the statement said.
According to Almasadam Satkaliyev, the next natural stage in the development of the industry is the revival of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan.
In this regard, a project is being implemented to build the first nuclear power plant, which is of strategic importance for the further development of the country's energy potential.
Concluding his speech, Almasadam Satkaliyev noted that Kazakhstan is open to further development of international cooperation, effective use of scientific potential and introduction of modern technologies for sustainable development and strengthening global energy security.
