A 23-year-old resident of Astana has been sentenced for spreading false information about violence in the army on the Threads social network to make money. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the police, the man fabricated a story about being sexually assaulted during military service and claimed his life was in danger, asking for financial help to leave the country. The post also included bank details for money transfers.
One of the social media users filed a complaint against the man. The police determined that the information was false. The convicted man had never served in the military. To collect money, he used the bank account of a 17-year-old acquaintance who was unaware of the circumstances. Within two days, more than 15 money transfers were made to this account.
During the investigation, the suspect admitted that he published the false information solely to make money. A criminal case was opened on charges of fraud and knowingly spreading false information. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to 3 years in prison.
