A fire at a solid waste landfill in Astana has been burning for three days, with extinguishing efforts ongoing around the clock. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the Astana Department of Emergency Situations, the fire started on July 9 at the solid waste landfill in the Baikonyr district. Two combat sectors have been established, with main forces and resources mobilized.
"To increase the effectiveness of firefighting, two combat sectors have been created where the main forces and resources are concentrated. Engineering work is also being carried out to isolate the fire sources and prevent further spread of fire by covering the landfill area with inert material," the statement said.
To date, about 14,850 tons of inert material have been delivered to the landfill. However, operations are complicated by heavy smoke and accumulated waste, which restricts the movement of special equipment and hinders the maneuvering of large-sized machinery.
The area and cause of the fire have not yet been specified. Emergency officials say it may take several more days to fully extinguish the fire.
