The fire at the solid waste landfill in the Baikonyr district of Astana has been completely extinguished. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
To coordinate the work, an operational headquarters was set up under the leadership of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. The fire was extinguished around the clock with the involvement of ministry units.
At the same time, engineering work was carried out at the landfill to fill the area with inert material. The Akimat of Astana ensured the operation of construction and engineering equipment, and the delivery of soil was carried out continuously.
"In total, about 15 thousand tons of inert material were delivered and used at the landfill, which made it possible to almost completely cover its territory, localize the fire sources and prevent the re-spread of fire," the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
The department noted that thanks to the joint work of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the capital's akimat, the fire, which covered an area of about three hectares, was completely extinguished.
Several units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as equipment from the akimat, were involved in extinguishing the fire. Local authorities said they would conduct monitoring to assess the environmental consequences of the fire. Due to concerns about air quality, the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted that air samples were taken both during and after the extinguishing. According to preliminary data, no exceedances of maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances were recorded.
The fire at the landfill started in early July 2026. It took several days to extinguish. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that a special commission had been established to determine the cause of the fire. According to preliminary versions, the fire could have been caused by spontaneous combustion of waste or violation of fire safety rules.
The mayor of Astana thanked all services involved in extinguishing the fire and noted the need to strengthen safety measures at the landfill to prevent such incidents in the future. Gratitude was also expressed to the city residents for their patience and understanding during the fire.
Currently, restoration work is underway at the landfill. Thanks to the large volume of inert material, the fire sources have been completely eliminated. The Ministry of Emergency Situations keeps the situation under control and regularly checks the condition of the landfill area.
This incident once again highlighted the problems of the waste management system in Kazakhstan. Experts note the need to modernize solid waste landfills and introduce recycling technologies. The akimat promised to take measures to improve the situation at the landfill.
