The tragic incident

Akmaral Karabalina had been working as a crane operator at the company "Kazstroypodryad" for exactly one year. The tragic incident occurred on August 31 in Astana.

Management rushed her

"The bosses gave the order to "quickly, quickly dismantle" the crane. We had to finish before September 1. We were building the parking lot of a residential construction project," says Akmaral Karabalina.

Safety rules were not observed

According to Akmaral, there were no special specialists ensuring safety during the dismantling of the crane.

"We were supposed to have a special safety belt to hold us so we wouldn't fall, but we didn't have one. I asked where the truck crane that dismantles the crane was. The mechanic Dauren kept saying "it's coming now." "Dismantle quickly, Akmaral, just climb the crane" – he rushed me," she says.

There was no safety belt either

According to the construction worker, a special brigade dealing with safety also did not arrive during the dismantling of the crane. Usually, work on dismantling a tall crane was carried out with their help.

"We didn't have a safety belt. Coming up behind me, the bosses kept rushing: "go quickly, while you climb the crane, the special brigade will arrive." Two additional hired guys came, who they are is unknown. Very young guys, they don't even know how to dismantle a crane. They don't know how to turn on the pump either," says Akmaral.

Fell from the height of the 10th-11th floor

According to Akmaral, management hastily sent her to the top of the crane.

"They shouted to dismantle not from one section, but from two sections. When dismantling a crane, you remove one or two sections. I argued with them and said we would remove only from one section. At that moment the crane shook and I fell to the ground from a height of about the 10th-11th floor," says the injured woman.

The crane was dismantled by Akmaral and two other workers. When the crane collapsed, Akmaral was seriously injured, and one of the two men died at the scene.

"Safety rules were not observed. During the dismantling of the crane, welders and electricians used to constantly check before. This time it was not like that," says Akmaral Karabalina.

Management refused to help

Now the condition of 45-year-old Akmaral is serious. It took a long time to pull the woman out from under the collapsed crane at the construction site.
