A woman in Astana was sentenced to one year in prison and permanently banned from driving after she got behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs, despite having been previously stripped of her driver's license. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

Prosecutor Moldir Zholdasova of the Sarayshyk district prosecutor's office shared the details.

"A woman who had previously been deprived of her driver's license was sentenced to one year in prison for again getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs. In addition, the court permanently deprived her of the right to drive vehicles," the prosecutor said.

Moldir Zholdasova also cited other examples. Thus, a 40-year-old resident of Astana was given 15 days of administrative arrest for driving while intoxicated. He lost his driver's license for seven years.

Another driver, while intoxicated, drove into oncoming traffic and caused an accident. The court sentenced him to eight months in prison and banned him from driving for ten years.

According to the prosecutor, Kazakhstan provides both administrative and criminal liability for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The relevant norms are enshrined in Article 608 of the Administrative Code and Articles 345-1 and 346 of the Criminal Code.

Punishment depends on the circumstances and consequences: a driver may be arrested, deprived of their rights, or sentenced to prison. In some cases, the ban on driving is for life.

Raids are being conducted in the capital to identify violators. The prosecutor's office urged drivers not to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
