On July 6, Astana celebrates Capital City Day. To mark the occasion, the Bureau of National Statistics published 20 interesting facts about Kazakhstan's main city, showing how the capital has grown and changed in recent years. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

As of June 1, 2026, Astana has a population of 1,674,699. There are more women than men in the city — 884,029 women versus 790,670 men.

The capital remains one of the youngest cities in the country. The average age of its residents is 30.9 years, and the aging index is 22.9. This means that for every 100 children, there are about 23 residents over 65. Life expectancy in Astana has reached 78.8 years.

The city is home to about 545,000 children under 18, including 280,000 boys and 265,000 girls. In 2025 alone, 27,400 babies were born in the capital, and in the first five months of 2026, more than 3,469 marriages were registered.

Interestingly, 26 people across Kazakhstan bear the name Astana.

The capital's economy continues to develop actively. As of June 1, 2026, there are 274,285 small and medium-sized businesses operating in the city. Activity is particularly noticeable in the construction sector, with 18,500 companies registered — the highest figure in the country.

Astana has 576,000 apartments, and the number of fixed internet subscribers has reached 443,400.

The capital remains one of Kazakhstan's main gastronomic centers. There are 6,819 catering establishments — the second highest in the country after Almaty. Of these, 2,241 belong to legal entities and branches, and 4,578 to individual entrepreneurs.

The city's cultural life is also developing. Astana has 31 theaters, five museums, 35 libraries, and 24 parks.

The city is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign tourists. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, the capital's hotels hosted 67,900 foreign guests. Today, Astana has six five-star hotels.

Earlier, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Kazakhstani citizens on Capital City Day and shared his vision for Astana's future. The head of state also sent a congratulatory telegram to former President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who turned 86 on July 6. According to Tokayev, the decision to move the capital to Astana, made by Nazarbayev at the time, was one of the fateful decisions for the country.
