The trial of Lindsay Clancy, accused of killing her three children in the US state of Massachusetts, ended without a verdict. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing CNN.
After seven days of deliberation, the jury could not reach a unanimous decision, and on September 4, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial.
Prosecutors must now decide whether to retry the case. A hearing to discuss the future of the case is scheduled for September 29. Clancy remains in custody at Tewksbury psychiatric hospital.
Background of the case
Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse, lived with her husband Patrick and three young children. In January 2023, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan died in the family home.
The court proved that their mother strangled them. After that, the woman cut her wrists and neck and jumped from a second-floor window in an apparent suicide attempt. Doctors managed to save Lindsay, but she suffered paralysis of her lower limbs and now uses a wheelchair.
Defense and prosecution positions
Clancy did not deny her involvement in the children's deaths. However, her defense argued from the start that she was in a severe mental state due to postpartum depression and could not fully understand what was happening.
Before the tragedy, Clancy had sought help for her deteriorating mental health. The defense claimed she repeatedly told doctors about her problems, took prescribed medications, and underwent treatment, but ultimately did not receive the necessary help.
The prosecution presented a different version. According to the prosecution, Clancy acted deliberately and had created conditions to be alone with the children in advance. The court also examined her notes, search history, and testimony from experts about her condition.
Thus, the dispute in court was not so much about who caused the children's deaths, but whether Clancy was legally responsible for her actions at the time of the tragedy.
