The United States may adopt a bill on new sanctions against Russia by August, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
An updated version of the bill was published on Tuesday. It provides for the introduction of secondary customs duties of up to 100% for the five countries that buy the most Russian oil and gas.
"The White House really supports this bill. I think it could be passed by August," Blumenthal told reporters.
Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, the US has imposed unprecedented sanctions against thousands of Russian citizens and companies. In addition, sectoral trade restrictions have been adopted on the supply of hundreds of various goods to Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that new sanctions will not have a significant impact on the Russian economy. In his opinion, restrictions on Russian oil could lead to a sharp rise in oil and oil product prices on the world market, including fuel prices in the US.
