The United States and Iran may hold a new round of indirect talks on Monday, September 28. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
This was reported by Axios, citing two sources in the region. US President Donald Trump also told the outlet that he expects contacts with Tehran to continue this week.
Qatar continues mediation
According to Axios, Qatar continues to act as a mediator between the sides. As early as Monday, Qatari representatives may meet separately with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff. At the same time, the final date of the new round of talks has not yet been confirmed.
"I expect new talks with Iran this week. They want to make a deal, but they are offering not the deal I need," Trump said in an interview with Axios.
Trump considers resuming strikes
The American president indicated that he is also considering the possibility of resuming strikes on Iran. When asked by a journalist about this, he replied that he "always thinks about it."
The previous round of indirect talks took place last week in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It was attended by Araghchi, Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Qatari representatives passed messages between the Iranian and American sides.
Tehran's proposal
Tehran proposed opening the Strait of Hormuz within a week and resuming talks on the nuclear program, provided that the US lifts the naval blockade, removes restrictions on the sale of Iranian oil and restores the ceasefire regime in the region. Trump said he rejected this proposal. Washington insists on Iranian concessions on the nuclear issue, while Tehran wants to focus the talks on the Strait of Hormuz and the American blockade.
Despite Trump's refusal, mediators continue to discuss a possible compromise with both sides. Araghchi said that Iran is interested in a diplomatic solution and is currently awaiting an official US response through the mediators.
