Police have released new details about the attack on an elementary school in the United States. It emerged that a teacher and the father of two schoolgirls stopped the 16-year-old shooter. The woman grappled with the teenager, after which the man shot him with a pistol. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
How the attack unfolded
Reuters, citing a press conference by Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, reported the details. The attack occurred on October 15 at Silver Rail School in Oregon. Three children aged five, eight and eleven, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert, were killed.
During the attack, one of the teachers threw a phone at the teenager, knocked him down and began struggling with him. Then a 36-year-old father of two students ran into the classroom. He fired several shots at the attacker with a pistol he legally owned. The teenager died before police arrived.
According to Krantz, the teacher's actions almost certainly helped avoid further casualties. She herself was not injured. Her name is not being disclosed.
"The teacher who was ready to stand up and fight for her children — that is true heroism," the police chief said.
Who stopped the shooter
The man who stopped the shooter was identified as Kaylab Jamanco. His mother, Kenda Freeman, told The New York Times. According to her, her son does not seek recognition, is grateful for the support and asks that his privacy be respected.
Police established that the attacker was 16-year-old former student Griffin J. John II. He was armed with a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun.
Before the attack, the teenager threw the weapon over the school fence and climbed over after it. The driver of a passing truck tried to stop him verbally, after which the teenager opened fire on the vehicle.
He then shot out locked glass doors and burst into a classroom where children of various ages with special educational needs were studying. According to police, he fired about 15 shots in the classroom. He still had 44 rounds of ammunition on him.
Police response and investigation
Police arrived within three minutes of the first call. By that time, the attacker was already dead. Investigators are working to establish his motives and how he obtained the shotgun.
In addition to the four dead, a seven-year-old child and another teacher were injured. The child's condition is assessed as serious but stable. The teacher has serious injuries, but there is no threat to her life.
The family of the deceased Megan Lambert said that working at Silver Rail was her dream job. Relatives thanked Jamanco, who stopped the attacker, and called him a hero.
The day after the tragedy, residents of Bend brought flowers and candles to the school.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that the shooter was stopped by an armed local resident who followed him into the school. At that time, it was not yet known that the man was the father of two students, and that a teacher had struggled with the attacker before his intervention. The FBI has joined the investigation.
