The United States and Iran are close to signing an agreement to end the war. According to Reuters, the American side expects to sign the document as early as Sunday, June 14 — on the birthday of US President Donald Trump, when he turns 80. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
A US administration official told reporters that the parties have already agreed on the text of a preliminary agreement and Washington expects to finalize the deal in the coming days.
The draft agreement provides for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and the lifting of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. In return, the US is ready to unfreeze part of Iranian assets and ease sanctions on oil exports.
After signing the document, the parties intend to return to negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
According to Western sources, the agreement could be signed by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Geneva is being considered as a possible venue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the final version of the deal could still change, but he already considers it beneficial for Tehran.
"Iran is the winner of the war with the US," he said on state television.
According to the minister, Iran, together with Oman, will retain control over the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and gas supplies passed before the conflict began.
Despite progress toward peace, tensions in the region remain. On Friday, US military shot down several Iranian attack drones heading toward the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, the drones could have posed a threat to commercial vessels. Later, US Central Command said the strait remains open to shipping.
At the same time, Iranian media reported explosions near the port of Sirik and Qeshm Island. According to local authorities, Iranian military fired warning shots at vessels attempting to cross the strait without permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously stated that the country does not intend to join the future agreement between Washington and Tehran.
The day before, Donald Trump said that the signing of the agreement between the US and Iran could take place as early as next weekend in Europe. However, Iran denied this statement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei called reports about the time and place of the document's signing premature and speculative.
