US President Donald Trump said Washington has concluded an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that grants the American side permanent control over the island's security. The head of the White House wrote this on Truth Social, Reuters reports. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to Trump, the arrangement will allow the United States to indefinitely take any actions on Greenland's territory that Washington deems necessary to protect the island and its own national security.
"The United States will forever have the full ability to do in Greenland everything necessary for its protection," Trump said.
The American president also said that countries the US considers adversaries will no longer be able to place military bases in Greenland, create other military presence, or make "sensitive investments" without Washington's written permission.
Trump called the reached arrangement an agreement for an "infinite term." According to him, it will not require additional expenses from the US. Washington intends to begin creating a significant military presence in certain areas of the island.
At the same time, the agreement does not provide for the transfer of Greenland to the United States. The island will remain an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Earlier, Trump repeatedly stated that he would like to get Greenland under full US control.
Before the president's statement, Reuters reported that Washington and Copenhagen had come close to an agreement on expanding the American military presence on the island. The talks touched on the possible deployment of elements of the Golden Dome missile defense system and limiting China's activity in the region.
The US already has the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. The American military presence on the island is regulated by a 1951 agreement with Denmark.
